O Asma (Maid of the Ahlulbayt)
My mother, if she sees us
Will her wounds heal? And will her soul mend?
With trembling hands, they (Imam Hasan and Husayn) knocked at the door, and their orphanhood overflowed
They felt that the palm of death, this night, would take their mother
And Asma came to hold them, distracting them with her words
But once she saw Husayn's tears, she burst into weeping
They do not realise
That she does not know how…
To hold back the speech of the tongue
When the speech of the eyes comes out
O Asma
My mother, if she sees us
Will her wounds heal? And will her soul mend?
She wanted to send them back to the mosque, but how could she send them back?
When their mother, al-Zahra Fatima, is the soul within their bodies
They said, O Asma, if our mother sees us, she will forget her sorrow
She heals when she breathes in our scent, and we heal when we breathe in her scent
Open the door
Al-Zahra's rib has not healed
Let us, with our lament
Help her through the tragedy
O Asma
My mother, if she sees us
Will her wounds heal? And will her soul mend?
When they entered the room, they found al-Zahra, her laments gone quiet
They said, maybe our mother has healed from the fracture, perhaps she has
The wound of the rib would not let her sleep through any night…
And praise be to God who granted al-Zahra recovery
Enough lamenting
Let al-Zahra rest
No eyelids can close
For one whose unborn child fell from her
O Asma
My mother, if she sees us
Will her wounds heal? And will her soul mend?
They found her facing the qibla when they entered upon her
Draped in a white cloth, with her hand beneath her cheek
They lifted her covering and saw the redness of her eyelid and cheek
And the door, the wall and the blood, all of them bear witness
She has witnesses
Her back blackened from the whips
Why should her father's entrusted one
Return with a broken rib?
O Asma
My mother, if she sees us
Will her wounds heal? And will her soul mend?
When they saw her laid there, Hasan lamented for her
And Husayn kept pressing his cheeks against her legs
Mother, I am your little son, the slaughtered one, speak to me
You have never done this to me, that I call you now and you do not answer me
Open your eyes
I am your beloved Husayn
Have tenderness for the stranger
And you are a mother with a tender heart
O Asma
My mother, if she sees us
Will her wounds heal? And will her soul mend?
